These days, more and more people are turning to their mobile devices or desktop computers to stream movies, TV shows and more, rather than relying on a cable subscription. Where streaming apps were once few and far between, now there are tons of them to choose from. However, rather than spending hours trying every app, only to find that many don’t work or don’t offer what they promise, why not let us take the hard work out of it?

We tested many different apps for you and found these that work well. Not all of them are free, and availability may depend on your country, so don’t expect all of them to work for everyone.

Amazon Prime Video

The video streaming service on offer from Amazon, Prime Video costs $12.99 per month or, if you opt for a yearly subscription, $119.99. Along with video streaming, including Amazon Prime exclusives, you also get 2-day shipping on purchases, music streaming, and cloud storage. Streaming services include HDR and 4K, and it has just been given support for Chromecast. And, if you are prepared to pay extra, you can add services like HBO too.

HBO Now

HBO has always been a popular choice and HBO No is proving popular as a streaming service. Odd though it may seem to have just one channel, this has so much unique content that it has the audience to justify it. It isn’t cheap at $14.99 per month, but you do get a free trial to see if you like it. You also get unlimited access to all the content HBO offers over three separate streams.

Netflix

Netflix is one of the most popular of all media streaming apps, offering a huge choice of movies and TV shows. Working in most countries, prices start at $8.99 per month up to a maximum of $15.99 per month depending on where you are. And, while your region will also determine what you get to see, Netflix offers support for Miracast, Chromecast, 4K, smart TVs, games consoles, HDR10, and Dolby Vision just about everywhere. And if you want real DVDs to watch, prices start at $4.99 per month for their DVD app; simply watch what they send you and then return it.

Kodi

Kodi is a household name, the only truly free, open-source media app in the world. Legally, it offers you a place to store photos, movies, music, and any other media you might have, allowing you to stream it as and when you want. There are also a huge choice of add-ons that allow you to stream whatever movie or show you want to watch, but these are not classed as legal to use – if you download a VPN though, you should be safe to watch them. YouTube

YouTube is another streaming service that is growing in popularity. While the web app offers thousands of videos to watch, the mobile app offers more. And with a subscription to YouTube Red, you get even more choices with no ads. YouTube Gaming and YouTube kids offer varying content, and YouTube TV is here you get to watch more than 40 channels with full Chromecast support and the very best cloud DVR of all time. There is a free ad-supported version, and subscription prices range from $9.99 to $35 per month.

Tubi TV

Tubi TV is one of the new movie streaming apps to be released and, while it isn’t the largest, it does off a surprising amount of content to choose from. Fast becoming very popular, Tubi TV offers a number of genres with something to suit most users, and it is free to download and use. It is legal to use, and you will be required to set up an account, but this is free. You do need an internet connection though, as there is no offline mode.

Hulu

Hulu is not only one of the more popular services, but it is also one of the most diverse. You get the usual movie and TV streaming, but you also get the option of watching Live TV as well. With a free trial on offer, prices start at $5.99 per month but if you want the live TV option, which includes everything Hulu has to offer, expect to pay $39.99 per month. There are more than 50 channels to choose from with the option of an extra subscription to expand that, and there is full support for Chromecast.

Roku

Roku TV requires the purchase of a Roku device, with prices starting at just under $30. Plug it into your TV and watch to your heart’s content. While there are plenty of free channels, offering movies, TV series, shows, news, cartoons, documentaries and more, there are also a series of subscription-only channels, such as Netflix.  For most viewers, the freebies will offer enough choice, and there are no extra charges or subscriptions required.

Sky

There’s no denying that Sky is the number source of movies and TV shows. As well as a live TV with a choice of more than 370 channels to watch, Sky also offers Sky Boxsets and Movie Store. There is a huge choice of movies, series, live TV, children’s channels, music, news, documentaries, and more and packages start £22 per month.

Virgin Media

Virgin Media is a great On-Demand service offering the best choice of boxsets, movies, and catchup TV anywhere. With an at-a-glance guide to the week ahead, Virgin ensures that you never miss another episode, movie or sports game.  Although you are required to have a Virgin subscription and set-top box, you do get access to Virgin Go, an online service that lets you watch wherever you are. There are various packages on offer, giving you the option of watching what you want.
